Desert Piece In Turquoise Desert Piece In Turquoise is a panel from the Desert Series collection. The experiences shared in the desert are something that will stay with me and my family forever. The land, wide open spaces with evidence all around that this was once seabed, seemed endless. Yet this whole country is no bigger than Yorkshire! It is a peaceful, beautiful and deadly place that never ceased to amaze with pockets of unlikely life everywhere, dormant life, ephemeral, transient life. Shrubs and bushes exploding with butterflies in the days that followed rain, yet gone by the time of return to prove the spectacle. It is also an industrial wasteland, with evidence strewn across the rocky sand between the well heads and cement factories that seemed to appear above the heat haze horizon like some kind of post-apocalyptic moonscape vision. The people, the wealth, the traditions, the facades, the contradictions, to us, the paradise, to the workers, not so……. Most traditional places have been torn to the ground and rebuilt to mimic tradition but are littered with boutique hotels and restaurants. Façade is my favourite way to describe it. Handcrafted Each panel is an individual work of art, signed by myself and a one-off. Please take a look at some of my other panels, diptychs and triptychs in my Desert Series collection. The panels are fired to 1250 C with a plain black and transparent glaze. Then there is a screen-printed image featured. A thick porcelain slip is then applied with mark-making around the resisted image. This is manipulated to control the process of cracking. Several glazes and raw materials are then added to define the mood and atmosphere of the piece. It is then re-fired to 1260 C during which the textures take hold in the re-melted glazes.
